The European Senior Tour is set to visit Benahavis in Spain for the first time when the Benahavis Senior Masters takes place at La Quinta Golf and Country Club from 2-4 October 2009.
Former Spanish Ryder Cup legend Manuel Pià±ero, who is also the course designer at La Quinta, will feature in the inaugural event competing in a strong field of eligible Senior Professionals.
La Quinta Golf and Country Club, which is managed by Troon Golf, lies in the heart of the region of Benahavis, Andalucia, – an area renowned for its beautiful mountain scenery and outstanding golf courses. It is currently home to nine of the 60 golf courses in the Costa del Sol with this number expected to increase to 15 in the next decade.
Jose Antonio Mena Castilla, Mayor of Benahavis, said, “Benahavis looks forward to welcoming the European Senior Tour in 2009. Golf is an important part of Benahavis and I am sure the European Senior Tour professionals and spectators alike will enjoy the beautiful scenery and pleasant environment that exists here.”
The agreement between the municipality of Benahavis and the European Senior Tour has been brokered by promoters, WSM Sponsorship.
Andrew White, chief executive of WSM Sponsorship, said, “WSM are delighted to announce another new tournament on the European Senior Tour. We are great supporters of seniors golf and the introduction of this event demonstrates both our commitment to the European Senior Tour and further reinforces our position as the leading independent promoter for the European Senior Tour.”
Andy Stubbs, managing director of the European Senior Tour, said, “We congratulate WSM Sponsorship in securing another event on the European Senior Tour schedule in 2009. We would like to thank the region of Benahavis for their support in showcasing this part of Spain as one of the leading golf destinations.
“Manuel Pià±ero is an active member of the European Senior Tour, as well as the players’ committee, and we would like to acknowledge his part in bringing this event to fruition. The Benahavis Senior Masters is the third new event to be announced on the 2009 European Senior Tour schedule, following the season opening Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum, which is also a WSM event, and the Son Gual Mallorca Senior Open in May.”
The full 2009 European Senior Tour Schedule will be released early in the New Year.
