As a result of Wales staging the 2010 matches, Ryder Cup Wales – for the last three years – has been able to secure invitations for Wales’ up and coming golfers to play Challenge Tour events – the breeding ground for the top class players of the future. Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd secured a total of 23 spots over nine Challenge Tour events around Europe. This has given invaluable experience to seven Welsh professionals.
The National Lottery funded à‰lite Cymru programme currently supports around 130 competitors in Wales – including 16 rising golf stars – providing funding, sports science support, medical back-up, career and education advice, coaching and access to first-class training facilities. A number of high profile competitors like Stephen Dodd and Bradley Dredge have benefited from the support that has helped them to reach the highest levels.
Its panel – which includes former Elite Cymru member David Park as well as representatives from the Welsh Golfing Union – will now help Ryder Cup Wales in assessing the eligibility of those golfers hoping to take advantage of the invites.
John Jermine, chairman of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd, explains, “This announcement is yet another example of how Ryder Cup Wales is working in partnership with the Sports Council for Wales to maximise the golfing legacy of bringing the prestigious event to Wales.”
