The UK’s premier consumer golf magazine has signed up to support one of Europe’s biggest amateur competitions – offering club golfers the chance to play a Grand Final in Egypt.

Today’s Golfer has become an official sponsor of the Matchplay Championship, where thousands of golfers go head-to-head every year to reach the illustrious Grand Final at Egypt’s five-star Marriot Taba Heights resort.

The magazine will support the championship by providing regular coverage of the knockout rounds and the regional finals as well as comprehensive reports from the Grand Final.

In addition, the magazine will also promote the championship to its army of almost 300,000 loyal readers, further enhancing the Matchplay Championship as the country’s leading amateur pairs tournament.

John Woosey, managing director of The Golfer’s Club which promotes the Matchplay Championship, said, “We are thrilled to have Today’s Golfer on board supporting the Matchplay Championship.

“As the premier consumer golf magazine in the UK, no publication is better placed to promote the championship and competitors will enjoy about their exploits in such a well-regarded magazine.

“The Matchplay Championship not only offers players a tremendously exciting and competitive tournament of golf but, for just £20, the chance to play in one of the most stunning golfing locations on the planet.

“We are looking forward to a record number of entrants this year and the support of Today’s Golfer will be paramount to that. With such fantastic competitive golf, great exposure and a stunning prize on offer, there really is no reason not to enter.”

Andy Calton, editor of Today’s Golfer, said, “We are delighted to offer our support to the Matchplay Championship. It is a fantastic tournament which gives amateur golfers the chance to enjoy the experience of playing competitive golf in a five-star environment and feel like a professional for a week.

“Our readers enjoy fun and competitive golf and it doesn’t get any better than playing for the chance of a trip to Egypt to compete in a Grand Final.”

As this year’s finalists are returning from Egypt after a thrilling final – won by Cheshire golfers James Lightfoot and Michael Brockbank, entries for the 2008/09 competition are already being invited.

Golfers have until the end of June to enter before the competition begins in earnest in July as thousands of golfers will once again go head-to-head for a coveted seat on the plane to Egypt.

The pairs will play a series of knockout matchplay rounds against other golfers from their area with the winners qualifying for a regional final at a prestigious UK venue in April 2009 with a Grand Final place at stake.

The Marriot resort, nestled on the Sinai Peninsula on the Red Sea cost, is famed worldwide for its luxurious surroundings, championship golf course and stunning scenery.

The championship costs just £20 per person to enter and golfers who want to enter the 2008/09 event can do so online by visiting www.matchplaychampionship.co.uk or www.todaysgolfer.co.uk
