Scots hang on to antique book

12.11pm 2nd January 2000 - PeopleSalesroom & Memorabilia

A rare Scottish golf book which fetched a world record £7,700 at auction will stay in Scotland.

The volume, D Hay Flemming’s’Historical Notes and Extracts Concerning the Links of St Andrews’, was bought by a Scottish collector during a special sale at St Andrews.

Written in 1893, the book is an account of golf in the town during the Victorian era – and the only record of another copy of the book sold at a public sale was last year at an American auction house when it fetched $10,000.

The expected value was just £1,000 and Sandra Urie, who handled the sale for Macgregor Auctions, said: “”We knew it was a valuable and rare book, but we were astonished by the impact it caused.””
