Shawn Smith

Mr. Smith, a Montana native, attended Washington State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture and played on the golf team. Following a brief stint in golf course construction, Shawn joined the Arthur Hills’ team in 1998 and became a Principal in 2010. He has been a member of the prestigious American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) since 2009.

According to Arthur Hills, “Shawn’s experience as a competitive player, coupled with his passion for the unique architectural elements of the classic courses, brings a well-honed skill set to the table for our clients.” Steve Forrest adds, “It makes no difference whether the topic is Biarritz greens, bunker liners, budget numbers or bulldozers—Shawn knows his stuff and will share his opinion! We are thrilled to be able to recognize his many years of experience with this promotion.”

During his time with the firm, Shawn has been involved in a number of new course designs including Journey at Pechanga (Temecula, CA), Wolfdancer Golf Club at Hyatt Lost Pines Resort (Austin, TX) and Eagle Ridge Golf Course at Percy Quin State Park (Louisa, KY). Shawn has also successfully completed a number of major renovation projects including Oneida Golf & Country Club (Green Bay, WI), Westmoreland Country Club (Wilmette, IL), and Oakland Hills Country Club – North Course (Bloomfield Hills, MI), which received the ASGCA Design Excellence Award in 2014.

Hills • Forrest • Smith [Golf Course Architects] is among the game’s elite practitioners of golf course architecture, with all three partners being members of the ASGCA and both Hills and Forrest serving terms as the society’s President. More than 200 of the firm’s original designs and 150 renovations are in play across the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia. Its portfolio of award-winning courses includes a diverse collection of residential golf communities, private clubs, resorts and daily-fee developments.
