The Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake is celebrating the winning of three awards.
The Club, which last year hosted the 135th Open Championship, has been honoured for its contribution to tourism and the sporting life of Merseyside.
The Wirral Tourism Awards for Excellence gave Royal Liverpool the Wirral Tourism Ambassador Award; the Mersey Partnership Tourism Awards named the Open Championship as the Best Tourism Experience of the Year; while BBC Radio Merseyside delighted the historic Club with its coveted Scouseology Award for Sport.
Back on the Open rota after four decades, Royal Liverpool was the setting for one of the finest Open Championships of all time. Hundreds of thousands of spectators and tens of millions of television viewers watched as the greatest players in the world got to grips with classic links golf on a course that demanded enormous imagination. It was Tiger Woods, of course, who navigated his way to a memorable victory to win the title and lift the Claret Jug.
The secretary of Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Chris Moore, said, “An enormous amount of hard work by many people and bodies, together with the enthusiasm of the local community, combined to bring The Open back to Hoylake and then make it one of the greatest Championships ever. These awards are a reflection of that great collective effort and support.”
