Majestic McIlroy Clinches USPGA Championship in style with Titleist

8.57am 17th August 2012 - Corporate

Capturing his second Major victory this weekend, Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy once again re-wrote the Major history books. Following his record breaking maiden Major win at the 2011 U.S. Open, the 23-year old clinched the USPGA Championship by eight shots, converting a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole to set a new record for the event’s margin of victory.

McIlroy was the only player in the field to fire three rounds in the 60’s, following a third round 67 with a bogey free final round 66 to break the record which was set 32 years ago by golf’s most decorated Major champion, Jack Nicklaus. With the win McIlroy also reclaims his position at the summit of the Official World Golf Rankings, replacing fellow Pro V1x loyalist, Luke Donald.

McIlroy trusted Titleist equipment from tee-to-green to win his second career Major, including the Pro V1x golf ball, 913D3 prototype driver, 906F2 and 910F fairway metals, MB irons, Vokey Design SM4 pitching, sand and lob wedges and Scotty Cameron putter. The win marks the third Major championship for Titleist golf ball loyalists in 2012, as McIlroy follows Masters champion Bubba Watson (Pro V1x), and Titleist Brand Ambassador and U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson (Pro V1x) into the 2012 Major winners circle. Trusting the total performance of the new Titleist 913 prototype driver, McIlroy led the field in driving distance with a 311.5 yard average off the tee. His win also marks the first Major win for the new 913 prototype driver, and sees McIlroy become the third Titleist Brand Ambassador to earn multiple victories on the PGA Tour this year, joining Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson.

There were a number of high finishes for McIlroy’s fellow Titleist golf ball loyalists, including Ian Poulter (Pro V1x) who finished tied-third, Titleist Brand Ambassador Steve Stricker (Pro V1x), and Titleist golf ball loyalists Jamie Donaldson (Pro V1) and Blake Adams (Pro V1x) who finished tied-seventh.

Titleist’s golf ball success at three of the four Majors in 2012 has been closely followed by tee-through-green success for Titleist equipment, with more wins across every major product category, including: golf balls (24 compared to 4 for the nearest competitor), drivers (14, compared to 6), fairway metals (14 compared to 9), hybrids (8 compared to 4), iron sets (15 compared to 5), wedges (18 compared to 5) and putters (13 compared to 6). Titleist was also the top choice of the majority of the field in a number of categories atKiawahIsland. 92 players put their trust in the feel and control of the #1 ball in golf, compared to 21 for the nearest competitor, and Titleist also topped the counts for iron sets, wedges and putters respectively.
