For the first time The European Institute of Golf Course Architects are to host their annual conference in Scandinavia. The event, which will take place in Malmö, Sweden, on 26th April 2013, will bring together Europe’s leading golf course architects as well as representatives from the golf industry throughout the Nordic Countries, including Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.
Over the last thirty years golf has become a hugely popular sport in Scandinavia and a vast number of new golf courses have been constructed. The conference will look at the reasons behind this success, at how the level of interest can be maintained and try to determine what lessons can be learned by other countries.
In addition speakers will examine the particular issues which designers, contractors and golf course managers have to overcome when operating in this region.
EIGCA Vice President, Peter Fjällman, who has planned the conference, said; “I look forward to welcoming my colleagues and fellow EIGCA members to Malmö in April. A pan-European conference for golf course architects has never been hosted in the Nordic countries before and this event will present a wonderful opportunity to learn about the development of Scandinavian golf. The sport here has quite a short but very successful history and we have planned a wide range of speakers to look at the way the game has developed in the last 20 or 30 years.”
One of the headline speakers will be Agnar Kvalbein, researcher and consultant at Bioforsk Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research. Mr Kvalbein will be discussing two topics which are of fundamental importance in northern climates. His first talk will address ‘Drainage Versus Surface Water Control’ and later he’ll be investigating ‘Winter Injuries on Golf Greens’.
