A survey amongst regular golfers by Sports Marketing Surveys suggests that during the 16 days of the Olympic Games, a combination of non-stop interactive TV coverage and the least sunny August on record caused golf to lose a total of some 900,000 rounds!
Spreading that evenly over UK golf courses would suggest an average ‘loss’ of 360 rounds per venue, or over 22 rounds per day. At a typical commercial operation this equates to £560 over 16 days, or £9,000 of lost revenue!
With some 650 pay & play courses this equates to a total loss of £5,850,000 in green fees, to which must be added sales of balls and clubhouse food and drink!
The same survey confirms golfers’ interest in the Olympic movement with just over 50% wanting to see Golf included in the Olympic Games.
